Austin, TX – Texas After Violence Project (TAVP) is thrilled to announce "Archives is a Sacred Word," an art exhibit showcasing the profound memory work of artistic collaborators at the Travis County Correctional Complex. The exhibit will take place on August 30th, inviting the public to engage with the deeply personal and reflective art created during six transformative workshops facilitated by TAVP’s archives and programming staff in the spring of 2024.

"Archives is a Sacred Word" is more than an exhibit; it is an invitation to explore essential questions: What is a document? What is memory? What is the value of storytelling? The exhibit encourages attendees to acknowledge the creative contributions of those currently incarcerated and to reflect on our responsibility to care for their memories and stories.

About Texas After Violence Project

TAVP is a public memory archive that fosters deeper understandings of the impacts of state violence. Our mission is to help build power with directly impacted communities, centering their dignity, agency, and expertise to cultivate restorative and transformative justice. We document the voices and experiences of those affected by violence in Texas and offer workshops on trauma-informed interviewing, community archiving, and more. Our initiatives aim to mend relationships torn apart by the carceral state and promote community-based accountability and healing.

"Archives is a Sacred Word" invites us all to ask what we hold sacred—and how we can honor it across enforced separation. Join us for an experience that bridges the gap between the inside and outside, celebrating the resilience and creativity of those impacted by the carceral state.
