Sunbathers is a series of paintings inspired by the confined space found in both interior and exterior environments. The use of the square as object-like reference without spatial hierarchy acts as both a container and a window to present a flattened and abstracted view into the figurative subjects, domestic objects, and the circumstances in which they exist. These gestures and concepts are filtered through an observational experience that is individually and specifically human; an experience also used as a pragmatic approach to painting.

Ellen Siebers is a painter based in Brooklyn, New York. She was born and raised in Wisconsin and received her MFA from the University of Iowa and her BFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She was a lecturer at the University of Iowa from 2009–12; a visiting faculty member at University of Wisconsin, Madison, from 2012–13; and currently works at the Brooklyn Museum. She has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions throughout the United States, including Frosch & Portmann, Proto Gallery, Field Projects, Fjord and The Provincial.
